Keep channels from accidentally transmitting, Set Duplex to Off in CHIRP.
For channels you only want to monitor, or scan, you can keep the channels from accidentally transmitting, you need a cable and use CHIRP to Set "Duplex" to "Off" on each channel you do not want to transmit on. This disables transmit. Duplex is 5th column from right in CHIRP.
Some Info Here
How to set radio to skip channels when scanning.
From the programming software (or CHIRP) you can set a channel to always be skipped though which is useful for things like NOAA weather radio which is always broadcasting.
The last column in CHIRP is Skip, on each channel you want to skip, change it from blank to "S" to prevent it from being included in scanning.
Make sure to set menu item 18 to "CO" so when scanning it will stay on the channel when it has traffic. Default is TO, which is time operation, stays on channel only 5 seconds. This menu setting is same in UV5R and UV82.
18 SC-REV CO: Carrier Operation - scanning will resume after the active signal disappears
How to show "Name" on channels in Baofeng radio
Enter name of channel in 3rd column in Chirp. then just hit Menu in radio, then go to option 21 (MDF-A) and set it to "Name". Option 22 (MDF-B) is for the B channel.
Or, this way, after entering names in CHIRP: Settings Tab, Basic Settings, Display Mode (A) to Name, and/or Display Mode (B) to Name.
Now your channel names will show when scanning.
